Dante was the studious, cautious one. This book was widely acclaimed but for some reason I didn’t really respond to it the way I expected. When you read that you realise the love between them that you sensed throughout was there, even if Malouf will continue to deny it. Stuck in a much earlier era where such things were never mentioned.
Rimbaud and Baudelaire are books he pressures Dante to read although Dante had not explored them, had no passion to find them himself. One person found this helpful.

I did enjoy this mohnno, but I struggled to get into the first 20 or 30 pages, and sort of rushed through the last 20 or 30 pages. I felt like there was t A nostalgic novel in regard to setting, that for me, made the characters and plot insignificant.

Penguin Notes for Reading Groups. I enjoyed the book a lot more when I read the author’s afterword at the end. He wasted a life, did little except drink and burn churches? In family disputes it can be useful in these situations to facilitate an acceptance of the demise of the personal relationship, the negotiation of a new relationship based on different assumptions and expectations.
Reading this right after Chris Tsiolkas’ Loaded, I found that they johnnl similar themes; restless young men with alcohol problems, who want more from life, but don’t know how to get it.
Loosely an autobiographical recollection of one of Malouf’s friends who died in his 20’s, Johnno is a slim and concise volume that mzlouf off this writer’s skill in manipulating the economy of words, while simultaneously providing us with detailed and evocative settings, multi-faceted character development, and a storyline that is hypnotic and forward-moving while remaining ruminative and thoughtful.

Aaran Avenue Hamilton, as an address, seemed slightly false. But a check of the record shows that along with the slightsJohnno had some serious fans from the start. Oct 23, Mary rated it it was ok. As well as an engaging story, I was particularly impressed by the way the book portrayed the interplay between machismo and gay, and the ‘roughness’ of the Australian male persona which amplifies overseas into a mock-heroic bravado, compelling Johnno to act outlandishly in every way but the way he wishes to.

An outrageous character of legendary proportions, Johnno is brought top life in all his complexity, beginning with his days at Brisbane Grammar School, when he and Dante first become friends, to the days they spend together in Paris, Johnno’s inexplicable rages and periodic transformations are recounted until we come to know him–without ever quite understanding him.
Some of it from mates such as Betty Riddell. This is a slim johnjo of less than pages. In the meantime I sat as quietly as possible while the other students recounted the many merits, crucial characters, events and plot developments that you notice when you read an entire book.
