One review on the cover says that they are too rich for one sitting, but too compelling not to read in one sitting. I finished and had the urge to try to sell my book, but i Moments of brilliance, some wonderful, quirky writing, but overall I felt like the collection beat relationship writing and really bizarre protagonist interiority gaitsklll death.

These stories left me uncomfortable without teaching me anything. Not only does she take out all the fun of getting to know a character, she also makes it easier for herself because then she doesn’t have to show you gairskill the person is wistful yet ferocious, she puts you in a position where you have to take her word for it. I read the second half largely on a flight and it was funny to wanhed “The Girl on the Plane” immediately after sitting down.
This kind of image threads through the entire collection, so that not only are you invited like a voyeur to look in on characters’ kinky fantasies, sexual confessions, and haunting carnal performances, you’re treated to these same issues in Gaitskill’s writing aesthetic.
Her work is often almost unrecognizably raw among writers of comparable skill and vision — the title story of this collection deals with a runaway teenaged girl who leaves the children she is gaitsklll when it begins to appear that their mother will not return.

The first pages of Mary Gaitskill’s writing that I read was a gaiskill of fun – I was nodding along and “oh my god, totally” -ing with her descriptions of uncertain people in uncertain situations.
