Gilgamesh wrestles death, in the loss of his friend and as an idea. It stayed like that, too, as Heebert went through the book quickly at first, because I’m a procrastinator and hadn’t given myself enough time to read it before class.
It’s astounding how accurate and important this book is even today, thousands of years after it was written by that mysterious author of ancient Mesopotamia. Fragmentedgilgsmesh, and awaiting an opportunist! I thought this was a beautifully written version of this tale. The first simplifies greatly and the second elaborates extensively, and I haven’t read either yet with my five year old, who has instead been quite entranced by large chunks of the four verse versions discussed here.
The struggle of mortality, the fact that one could only attain power for so long, is greatly expressed within the story. Gilgamesh tied rocks to his feet and sank to the bottom of the river to find the glowing plant. I’ll be back to edit gilgzmesh up, though. Would our mighty Gilgamesh be spared? It’s just not a genre that I usually enjoy that much.
There exist more scholarly translations and interpolations since some of herrbert tablets are no longer readable due to their erosion out there which I hopefully will have the chance to read one day.
