Turtledove’s books are always great entertainment but in all these novels about an alternate North America the possible route thr democracy, demagoguery and repression ring all too true.

As is fitting for a huge conflict that shows no mercy and deals death at random, there’s rarely any warning, which does an excellent job of illustrating that even when your cause is just as both sides of the conflict believe war is never a good thing, and has a steep price to all sides.


I am enjoying this entire series starting with the Great War. I love Turtledove always a great read.

Instead of that high-minded goal, however, readers are often faced with characters as superficial as they are forgettable. Readers unable to accept such a blatant rejection of American exceptionalism will be turned off by that alone, but those willing to consider the idea that things may have turned out another way will find a good deal to think about. It seems a set of contingency plans to deport all Mormons from Utah, possibly to the Sandwich Islandsare drawn up.

And Turtledove does not downplay the brutalizing effects of the fighting on the belligerents, Northerners as well as Southerners.
