Caroline is bad enough as it is. In lateAgatha’s husband, Archie, revealed that he was in love with another woman, Nancy Neele, and wanted a divorce. The evening following her death Ackroyd receives in the evening post a letter from her in which she names her blackmailer. Everything fits and makes sense and I just didn’t get there and I am blown away by the ending of this novel.

Passami la crema solare, amore. Actually it was more like a double what, because not only was it a really daring ending, especially for being published inbut I actually guessed the murderer! Lots of stock characters deftly inserted in nice bits along the way, and the grand twist at the end, carefully explained fully by Poirot, make this a true classic and, despite the twist seeming very small now-a-days, still a fun read.

This time, in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Christie leaves me hanging until I read mysteries in between denser reads and Dame Christie never disappoints me. But her books in the s and s were glorious, well-paced and interesting setting and subjects, and her mid-to-late libri books were lots of fun, if not exactly brain-taxing.

Despite a massive manhunt, she was not found for eleven days.
